Program Description:

GroupSTAR is a junior figure skating program that introduces skaters to the sport of figure skating and its disciplines (freeskate, skills and ice dance) in a fun, positive and challenging format.  Skaters will gain a solid foundation in correct skating technique, which will enable them to progress more quickly in the higher levels of figure skating.  Sessions are 60 minutes in length and include coach-led warm up and cool down exercises and group lessons focusing on the components of STAR 1-3 skills, free skate and ice dance.  Skaters will have free time to practice skill acquisition and run through their freeskate programs.  GroupSTAR sessions are instructed by Skate Canada Certified Professional Coaches and delivered in a group format.  All ice and coaching costs are included in the registration price.  Prerequisite(s): successful completion of CanSkate Stage 4 or equivalent.  Skaters must wear figure skates.  Helmets may be required.

The objectives of this class are:

Ballet: Is to help the figure skaters to learn ballet positions, proper hand, head, back, feet positions (feet turned out, knees open, hips under) & overall posture through movement. Spiral positions, spread eagles, Ina Bauer's, body alignment & awareness, carriage, strengthening ankles, pointing of toes, etc. All elements that transfer to figure skating.


Jazz: Body movement through levels of space, rhythm, style, performance using music and having a lot of fun doing it all!


Kevin's biography:

Originally from British Columbia, Kevin entered The National Ballet School in Toronto in grade 7 and graduated in 1991, with main teachers being Betty Oliphant, Glenn Gilmour and Luc Amyot. He received awards such as The Peter Dwyer Scholarship and The Ken Zeller Memorial Award along with many B.C Culture grants. After graduation, he danced with the National Ballet of Canada for 2 years, and guested with Ottawa Ballet. He then went on to Ballet West in Salt Lake City, as well as Alberta Ballet. After leaving Calgary, he joined the Pacific Northwest Ballet in Seattle. He moved back to Toronto in 2011 to do the Teacher Training Program at The National Ballet School where he entered as part time, receiving Pedagogy 1 and the Benesh Notation certificate. He has also passed all Cecchetti examinations. Kevin has taught for with Opera Atelier in Toronto, Vancouver Junior Professional Division, Harbour Dance Centre, Ballet Classique, Vancouver Ballet Society, Richmond Academy, the Arbutus Club, Extension Room in Toronto and Terpsichore School of Dance.

CanSkate is a dynamic learn-to-skate program that focuses on fun, participation and basic skill development.  Skaters will learn a series of balance, control and agility skills taught in six stages.  CanSkate is for participants who can move forward unassisted and complete a full lap around the arena with relative speed.  Skaters require a CSA approved helmet.  Our CanSkate sessions are instructed by Skate Canada Certified Professional Coaches and delivered in a group format.  All ice and coaching costs are included in the registration price.  Prerequisite(s): successful completion of PreCanSkate or equivalent.
